Union Assembly Chair Elections 2024: What do they do?
The 2024/25 Union Assembly Chair elections opened on October 8, running through till 3pm on Friday October 11.
Union assembly chair runs the meetings of the Union Assembly where proposals from students are debated between members.
The role has been described by the Students’ Union as “ensuring that our democracy at Union Assembly is inclusive, transparent and fair”.
Assembly chair ensures that the Students’ Union by-laws are stuck to, the agenda is prepared, and they help to risk assess any submissions before debate.
The Union Assembly chair facilitates the discussion of new ideas or policy proposals for the Students’ Union. These ideas are sent in by students through an online form.
The Union Assembly Committee includes the Union Affairs officer, at least two other executive officers and the Chair of the Union Assembly. An additional secretary is provided by the Students’ Union.
Any suggestions received must be debated by the assembly and formed by the union committee.
Both the agendas and the minutes for Union Assembly meetings are publicly accessible online.
The elections are conducted using the single transferrable vote system.
This is a ranked system of voting, where voters number candidates in order of preference. This includes a ‘Re-Opening Nomination’ option (RON), where students can choose to not elect any of the standing candidates.
The candidates manifestos are on the Students’ Union website.
Unlike SU executives, the role of Union Assembly Chair is a zero hour contract. The role is for the full 2024/25 academic year.
