Cafés on campus: too expensive or worth it?
By James Reeves
Benugo, Christie’s, Ali G, Costa, Nero, and the SU; there are many bustling cafes on campus but their pricing makes some reconsider.
Cafes on campus are a key part of the campus ecosystem, one of the few convenient places to socialise during the day. However, are they accessible to everyone?
The cheapest options are in the SU with options for just under £3. The university-run options cost a bit more whilst Costa and Nero take the cake price-wise. Any caffeine addict who buys a daily (or twice daily) cup will run up quite the tab over the year.
However, as spaces to meet friends and socialise a couple of times a week, they are much more reasonable, especially compared to bars and pubs in the area (including the SU’s extortionate 532 bar).
For the occasional social coffee drinker, like myself, the cafes are great spaces and a welcome financial alternative to their evening (or sometimes afternoon) counterparts.
But what is to be done for the daily caffeine addicts? The SU and university should install self-service coffee machines around campus for people looking for a quick fix. It would make a great addition to the campus cosy spaces initiative and the machines could be run at or close to cost.
