On screen style report #10: Susie Glass

Susie Glass put together effortless looks, from her never-ending supply of matching suits to her impeccable ability to accessorise, her style never failed to reflect her strong character. Whatever business in the drug world she had to attend to, no matter who she was blackmailing that day, she looked good doing it, and with this style guide, you can too.

TLDR

Although I’m late to the party, as I often am with TV shows, The Gentlemen still had me gripped (I finished it in about a week). Kaya Scodelario, playing the character Susie Glass, in particular. Handling dangerous drug dealers, running the empire her father built and manipulating billionaires to invest in the business, she truly is a woman who does it all, and with a flawless sense of style.

Matching suit sets and colour blocking

A staple for Susie’s wardrobe is a matching set, particularly when it comes to a suit. Although a suit can often be associated with being plain and boring, this is far from the case. She often uses a bright colour to create a monotone outfit, such as with her red velvet suit, using a matching chunky belt to accessorise.

Her chic pinstripe 3 piece suit has been dressed up for spring, with sunglasses, a colourful neck scarf for a pop of colour and layered gold necklaces, it’s hard to believe she probably had someone killed earlier that day!

For a more summery take on Susie’s style, the white Zara belted waistcoat top and trousers can be dressed up or down. Most likely, Susie would style this with chunky gold jewellery and a statement shoe to pop against the white. For a more wintery look, COS offers a mulberry velvet blazer and trouser matching set, the oversized shoulders and dark colour palette could be paired with one of Susie’s signature neck scarves. If you’re looking for some brighter colours in your wardrobe then the & Other Stories blazer and suit trouser combination would be perfect for a party, or if you’re anything like Susie, a red outfit is also excellent for hiding any bloodstains. Practical and chic!

Layered knitted jumpers

One of my favourite things about Susie’s character is that, despite her position of power, she doesn’t shy away from feminine colours, such as in the image above. Her perfectly matching pink shirt and knitted jumper give the impression she’s a preppy, prim, put-together woman, and in fact isn’t on the phone to a crime scene cleaner.

Especially when pairing these knitted jumpers with a houndstooth blazer like this, she seems to emulate the preppy image of a Ralph Lauren girl or Burberry model. Once again layering the gold necklaces and chunky earrings.

This Barbour knitted jumper is perfect for layering a shirt underneath, as Susie tends to do. Although it’s a jumper, the baby blue colour scheme means it can be styled for the chillier days of summer. As red seems to be one of Susie’s most worn colours (as well as her lipstick of choice) & Other Stories have a short sleeve knitted jumper with a collar, perfect for spring and summer. Susie often wears a neck scarf and this ASOS cardigan, retailing for £28, has a built in neck tie at the front. It looks chic, feminine and preppy, perfect for Susie’s style.

Chic berets

If the cape isn’t enough to convince you that this woman has style, the plaid beret should do it. From time to time, Susie’s character is seen wearing Berets around the family estate. Although Berets haven’t necessarily been on trend recently, Susie makes it work. Her, already varied style influences (preppy, drug lord, English countryside) just added Parisian to the mix.

This was definitely a favourite look for me, the red beret paired with this gorgeous red and white plaid tweed coat, the white dress underneath ties the outfit together so well.

If you are lucky enough to pull off a Beret, Accessorize offer a black wool Beret for £14.00, or if you’d rather inject some colour into your hat selection then Village Hats have a mauve pink Beret priced at £11.95.

Houndstooth and Tweed jackets

Susie’s blazers and jackets are often either an interesting colour, material or pattern. In this case, her light pink tweed jacket, reminiscent of a Chanel design, in the top photo accentuate her feminine style. Her impeccable eye for design is clear, down to her gold jewellery matching the gold buttons on her jacket. The houndstooth blazer in the image just above once again solidifies her preppy style, with a white blouse worn underneath, tied at the collar with a dainty bow.

This Zara tweed-look white jacket for £59.99, emulates the design of the baby pink Chanel-like coat. As it’s white it would pair with many outfits and would work for a brisk Spring evening. The oversized & Other Stories blazer is more of a wintery look. With oversized shoulders and a houndstooth pattern, Susie would definitely wear this to a business meeting in the colder months. The more autumnal Ralph Lauren coat on the other hand,  £2,045.00.

Statement earrings & layered necklaces

Without a doubt, Susie Glass is a gold girl. She’s almost never seen without her signature gold layered necklaces and statement gold earrings. Often, she wears a pair of sunglasses, an oversized accessory of some sort, in this case, a chunky belt, and has an array of gold rings on her fingers.

Ultimately, for Susie’s jewellery style, there are only a few rules to stick to; it has to be gold and chunky. For example, the Orelia chunky chain necklace, or for a bit of colour, En Route are selling an emerald pendant necklace for £29.00. An even cheaper option at  Accessorize is this coin pendant link chain necklace for only £12.00.

Neck scarves

Susie often pairs her suits with colourful, patterned silk scarves to tie around her neck. This injects some more vibrancy into her outfits and creates an even more chic, feminine look against the more masculine canvas of a suit. Alongside her Berets, it also adds to her slight Parisian style influence.

The Oliver Bonas scarf above is a beautiful abstract pattern of baby pinks, oranges and black. Meanwhile ASOS offer a silk-like scarf for £14.00 in a striped pattern with navy, red, light blue and white. At the eyewatering price of £470.00, although this Hermès scarf may be out of our student budgets, it’s a very affordable price for a drug lord. Susie would most likely be found on the estate wearing a silk scarf like this.

Susie’s style is somewhat unexpectedly preppy with Berets, neck scarves, knitted jumpers and houndstooth blazers. Despite being in a powerful drug lord role, she doesn’t shy away from feminine colours and clothing pieces. Undoubtedly, her preferred outfit is a matching two or three piece suit, always paired with chunky gold jewellery.

If Susie Glass’ style isn’t your cup of tea, perhaps another one of Kaya Scodelario’s characters, Effy Stonem, might be more to your taste, with another one of The Mancunion’s On Screen style reports.
