2018 is set to be another huge year in gaming, but as of yet, it has been relatively slim pickings in terms of big releases that have really wowed us. However, there is perhaps one exception that comes in the form a title that took most of us by surprise and that game is Monster Hunter World.

Whilst Capcom are by no means unheard of, developing and publishing some of the most iconic franchises in gaming – Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Dead Rising and Mega Man, just to name a few – the Monster Hunter series has never reached the same heights as its counterparts; with that being said, the hype around this particular instalment was virtually non-existent.

In case you hadn’t already noticed, Monster Hunter World is arguably the most successful game released this year: the game, which marks the sixth iteration in the series, scored 90% on Metacritic, a 9.5/10 from IGN, and to top it things off, a 10/10 from Trusted Reviews.

Clearly, the game has been both a critical and commercial success and for what is relatively small fry in terms of high-profile game franchises in Europe, its reception and sales figures are strong across the board. Not only has it clocked in at over 7.5 million units worldwide already, according to Polygon – another site that gave it a 9/10 by the way – this impressive haul has made it Capcom’s best-selling game of all time.

Now, we’re not saying that you’ve missed out on the biggest game of the year if you haven’t played this, after all, there is still a lot of 2018 left to go. However, when you consider that this huge RPG hasn’t even been released on PC yet, not to mention the fact that Iron Galaxy (a studio behind some big ports such as Skyrim) have signed on to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch: well, safe to say it has secured itself as one of this year’s stars, putting itself in history books along the way.
