On screen style report #9: Blair Waldorf
“Whoever said money doesn’t buy happiness didn’t know where to shop”, and no wiser words have ever been spoken by the Queen B herself. Gracing our screen on Gossip Girl from 2007, the ultimate muse, Blair Waldorf, had a showstopping wardrobe costing roughly $5000-10,000 per episode.
Blair, portrayed by Leighton Meester, plays a humorous overachiever and socialite in New York City. Primarily recognised for her signature one-liners, tweed outfits, and elaborate headbands. Her polished look represented a refined interpretation of the current “clean girl aesthetic” and served as an inspiration to many who aspire to emulate Sophia Richies’ ‘old money’ style. But what would this scandalous socialite wear in 2024?
Bows
When thinking of Blair, her accessories and headbands are the first things that spring to mind. Without a doubt, bows are today’s equivalent. Similar to her fixation with headbands, Blair Waldorf would dress up every look with vibrantly coloured bows of all shapes & sizes.
For instance, Blair would certainly wear any bow designed by Jennifer Behr. Specifically, this large, velvet, black bow decorated in diamond embellishments. Alternatively, she might consider this smaller and sleeker black, velvet Prada bow featuring the Prada logo in the centre.
Lace Tights
As the weather grows colder, no outfit would be complete without her lace or brightly coloured tights – because we all know that she would never be spotted in jeans.
In 2024, she would still wear these under skirts, especially the black opaque tights from Chanel with the recognisable double CC emblem embroidered on them. Alternatively, she may choose the timeless Gucci interlocking, G-logo tights imbedded with silver, metalic threads.
Kitten Heels
To elevate her look, she would strut around Constance in kitten heels for her every day outfits. These elegant and practical shoes are ideal for transitioning from daytime to evening looks. Most notably, she would probably wear the nude or black J’adior Slingback pumps from Dior. Without overly complicating the design, the canvas monogram on the back of the shoe adds a subtle detail.
Ballet Pumps
Although, if she wanted to give her feet a break, Blair would defiantly love the ballet pump trend. Ideally she would pair them with tights to achieve the “baby doll aesthetic” or have them peeping out underneath her straight leg suit trousers in a more professional setting.
Her closet would be stocked with the timeless Chanel quilted pumps. She would own them in every colour way and coordinate the bow on the front of the shoe with the one in her hair. They are available in both leather or tweed fabric. But it’s equally likely that she would love the Tory Burch cap-toe pumps , finished in a patent leather.
Blazers
Undoubtedly, Blair Waldorf would not only wear, but own the blazers trend. Forever remaining a timeless, statement piece, tweed blazers would no doubt be at the core of Blair’s daily style.
For instance, this versatile piece can be dressed down for an evening out with a maxi dress to stay warm & sophisticated. or worn more casually during the day to the office. Blair’s signature pearl jewellery would complement the intricate embellishments and detailing on this black Chanel tweed jacket.
Undoubtedly, Blair Waldorf was a huge style inspiration in the late 2000’s, still influencing audiences today. ‘Inspired by the beloved Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn’, Blair’s look, according to Eric Damon (Gossip Girl costume designer), is truly reflective of American fashion. She occasionally nods to the glitz of classic Hollywood with heavy Parisian influence.
Compared to her blonde counterpart, Serena, Blair always had a more refined appearance and dressed more gracefully, which explains why her style still resembles today’s trends. The classic, timeless pieces she wore have translated seamlessly to today’s modern styles. Want to know what Samantha Jones of Sex and the City would wear today?
