The University is celebrating Disability History Month from 14 November to 20 December 2024.

Staff and students will be able to get involved in the following key events:

  • November 28 – Social Model of Disability Online Training.
  • December 3 – Living Experience of Disability Panel and Social Event.
  • December 4 – Disability Data Lunch and Learn with members of the EDI Directorate.
  • December 5 – Unseen Aware Online Webinar hosted by the Disabled Staff Network.
  • December 16 – Online webinar with Paralympic Gold Medallist, Grace Harvey.

More information on these events and where to book your place can be found here.

Disabled students make up over 19% of University of Manchester students.

The University’s Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS) offers an inclusive service and is located in University Place.

The service provides support and aid in aspects of study, work, and the overall experience of university.

Jackie Carter, Academic Lead for Disability at the University said: “As we reflect on two hundred years of history, we are reminded of the rich diverse community that has made The University of Manchester one of the world’s leading institutions”.

“I invite you to join in with our exciting programme of events designed to deepen our understanding, celebrate our achievements, and create more inclusion for people with disabilities within our Manchester community and beyond”.

This year, UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) will create educational resources to inform students on the factors influencing the employment of disabled people, and how further improvements can be made moving forward.

This includes links to organisations and events that will take place across the country between November and December 2024.

Governmental statistics reveal there were 5.5 million British disabled people in employment in 2024, an increase of 310,000.

From 2013/14 to 2023/24, large areas of the UK saw a reduction in the disability employment gap.

The South East of England has seen the greatest change in this gap in the past 12 months, with a three per cent reduction.
