Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas! If you’re anything like me, those words fill you with utter dread because, once again, you’ve left your Christmas shopping until the last minute. Now, you’re scrambling to find gifts for everyone you know. But don’t worry—this list is your ultimate guide to the best places to shop in Manchester, all without getting stuck on Market Street (you’re welcome).

Unitom, NQ

Unitom is a design-led book and magazine store located in the heart of the Northern Quarter on Stevenson Square. A haven for book and magazine lovers, it offers the latest visual art publications from around the world, with a carefully curated selection spanning a wide range of genres—there’s truly something for everyone. Alongside their impressive library, Unitom stocks unique stationery and is always sourcing the most exciting designs. They also champion smaller publishers and designer prints, adding a distinctive touch to their collection. For Manchester enthusiasts, their photography section features stunning images of the city centre, making it the perfect gift for anyone connected to or fascinated by Manchester.

Whittard, Market Street

Okay, I admit it—Whittard is technically located on Market Street. But trust me, it’s worth the detour just for their coffee alone. If you or your loved one is like me and takes tea very seriously, this is the perfect place to visit. Offering luxurious teas, aromatic coffees, and creative hot chocolates, Whittard lets you become your own barista at home. They also have beautifully packaged gift sets featuring their bestsellers, making it a guaranteed hit for whoever you’re shopping for. Plus, you can enjoy a free tester of hot chocolate while you’re there—the perfect pick-me-up during a busy shopping trip.

Makers Markets, Various locations

Every weekend, the Makers Markets pop up in various locations across the city, making them accessible to more people by appearing in different neighborhoods rather than a single fixed spot. Regular locations include Spinningfields, Didsbury, Quayside, and more. The markets feature an incredible selection of handmade goods, unique gifts, and delicious treats for everyone to enjoy. They’re packed with talented local creators, beautiful crafts, and plenty of festive vibes. Check out their Instagram, @_makersmarket, to see where they’ll be this weekend.

Oklahoma, NQ

Tucked away in the Northern Quarter, this hidden gem is bursting with vibrant color, quirky homeware, and unique lifestyle finds. Labelled the “home of fun” on the door, Oklahoma might just be the funkiest shop in Manchester. They’ve got everything from cute jewelry to trendy furniture, all inspired by Mexican art and independently designed. There’s truly something for everyone—I’d say anything from Oklahoma makes the perfect gift! Whether it’s a classic design for your mum or something more eclectic to jazz up a student’s room, this shop has you covered. Don’t forget to check it out while you’re shopping!

Nice things, NQ

Also located in the Northern Quarter, Nice Things on Oldham Street feels like stepping into a garden centre. So tranquil and green, this shop is packed with unique plants and quirky plant pots. They cater to all preferences and spaces, with everything from tiny succulents to fully bloomed plants that reach the ceiling! What’s even better is that they’re very reasonably priced, with Calathea orbifolias for just £11.95 and Calla lilies for £9.95. Plus, they offer Christmas, plant care, and terrarium workshops that you and a loved one can enjoy together—or you could just buy them a terrarium DIY kit so they can start it themselves.

Selfridges, Trafford Centre

If you’re in doubt, head straight to Selfridges‘ massive toy section and grab a Jellycat for your loved one! Loved by everyone, no matter their age, these adorable soft toys make the perfect gift and are special enough that anyone would appreciate one this Christmas. I mean, what’s not to love? They’re just too cute, especially the Christmas editions—yes, I’m looking at you, Snowman Timmy Turtle (just in case anyone’s wondering what I fancy this year). Or, if you want to be more personal, you could gift a teddy that reminds you of that person, like their favourite food or sport.

Christmas markets, City Centre

If you’re brave enough to face the crowds and walk through Piccadilly Gardens (you’re a better person than me), why not head to the Christmas markets and explore the small, independent businesses? They offer a great selection of stocking fillers, from jewellery to handcrafted items. And while you’re there, you might as well treat yourself to a Yorkshire pudding wrap because you deserve it… or maybe grab a sweet treat at the flat baker? Or, hey, why not both? It is Christmas after all!
