By Grace Hilton

The University of Manchester has been recognised as one of the top 100 universities worldwide, across all subject areas.
This ranking comes from the Times Higher Education assessment.
Among these rankings, the university placed in the top 50 worldwide for five disciplines including, Business Economics, Social Sciences, Engineering, Medical and Health and Arts and Humanities.
The University of Manchester was also just one of eight UK institutions to rank in the global top 100 across all 11 subject areas.
Vice-President for Research, Professor Colette Fagan, said: “This latest influential global subject ranking provides additional evidence of our research and teaching strengths across the University – something to pause on and celebrate as we develop our Manchester 2035 strategy. Having achieved this global standing our job now is to work together, with ambition and focus, to do even better”.
This ranking is based on key performance indicators that assess five fundamental areas: research environment, teaching, research quality, international outlook and industry partnerships.
Professor April McMahon, Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, stated: “It’s a pleasure to welcome these rankings for our University, which demonstrate our strength and breadth across so many subject areas. It is important for us to benchmark our results to guide us in improving our design and delivery of high-quality teaching and learning in Manchester even further”.
These new rankings follow the Times Higher Education 2025 rankings where the university placed 53rd globally.
The subject rankings from THE are one of three key global rankings that the university monitors to assess its performance.
Other rankings include the QS World University Rankings, where the University of Manchester placed among the top 35 globally last year in the following five disciplines: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is another global ranking, where the university secured a place in the top 25 worldwide in seven out of forty-six subjects, ranking first in the UK for four of those subjects in 2024.
