Work has begun on the redevelopment of William Kay House, which will create an “innovation hub” at the heart of the campus.

Located opposite the Students’ Union, and next to Kro Bar, the new space will include flexible event, meeting and workspaces that will be open to staff, students and the wider community.

This work is part of the previously announced Manchester 2035 strategy, which outlines the University’s ambition to become a “powerhouse of innovation”.

A Grade-II listed building dating back to the 19th century, the University says it is committed to maintaining its heritage throughout the redevelopment process.

Once completed, the hub will house office and meeting spaces, as well as an events space with outdoor access. William Kay House will be the heart of student entrepreneurship, allowing students and graduates to realise ideas and contribute to the University’s innovation.

The University says William Kay House will act as a bridge between the main campus and sister campus, its “innovation district” on the former North Campus.

Professor Duncan Ivison, the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, said the William Kay House works are “an important step in bringing our Manchester 2035 strategy to life” which will benefit “our city, our region and beyond”.

The redevelopment is due to be completed by autumn 2026 and has been part-funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as part of its efforts to pursue innovation-led growth for the wider region.
