It’s not simply about remembering facts but how effectively we encode new information, store it over time, and retrieve it when needed. This intricate process means that improving memory requires more than passive review, it requires active engagement with the material in a deeper, more meaningful way. By understanding how memory works, you can use it to your advantage and adopt strategies that lead to long-term retention.
Before we jump into tips, it helps to know that memory consists of three key stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Understanding how each part works will help you study at your most optimal level!
Encoding: Pay attention
Encoding is your brain’s way of absorbing new information; the first time you read, hear, or experience something. Because our environment is rich with stimuli encoding must be selective, meaning only a fraction of what’s happening around us gets subsequently stored. When you walk through the city centre, for example, you might remember landmarks or shops, but not the license plate of every passing car. The trick is to stay focused while studying so your brain knows what’s worth keeping.
According to neuroscientist Dr Andrew Huberman, good encoding starts with the basics: sufficient sleep, hydration, and minimising distractions for optimal attention (yes, that means putting your phone down). A 2021 study surveyed medical students from top elite schools and found a significant correlation between habits and study outcomes. Additionally, reducing said distraction over time made a huge difference in their results. Dr. Huberman also noted that daily 10-minute meditation sessions are able to sharpen your focus. Storage: Sleep is your superpower
Once information is encoded, your brain needs to organise and file it away for later use. This is when your brain’s flexibility, also known as neuroplasticity, kicks in. Neuroplasticity involves the formation of connections between neurons. And guess what? Sleep is critical in this process. While we sleep, our brains are consolidating the information we’ve learned and further strengthening these neural pathways, helping with long-term memory formation.
During sleep, we cycle through different phases every 90 minutes, with REM sleep being the most active phase in which we dream. In REM sleep, related memories are linked together, making it known as being an important phase for problem-solving. During non-REM sleep, conscious memories are stabilised and consolidated, which is crucial for learning. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sleep deprivation can reduce learning ability by as much as 40%. So you might wanna think twice before pulling an all-nighter!
Retrieval: Test, test
Retrieval is the final stage and perhaps the most important one for students. It’s the real test (literally) of recalling what you’ve studied.
However, just re-reading your notes isn’t enough. The best way to solidify your memory is to test yourself. In 2008, Karpicke and Roediger found that students who were repeatedly tested on material without restudying performed better than students who repeatedly restudied without being tested. The act of practising retrieval is known as the “testing effect”, and is considered the most effective study method.
Even though this method can feel the most effortful; maybe even frustrating, this struggle is what strengthens your memory! Moreover, the testing effect is proportional: the more often you practice retrieving information, the easier it becomes in future. Bonus tip: free recall, like writing out an answer, works better than multiple-choice tests because you’re actively pulling out information rather than just recognising it.
