Sleigh the season: Your ultimate Christmas style guide
By Izzy Blake
Everyone’s favourite time of year is creeping closer – decorations are going up, Secret Santa’s are underway – and suddenly that age-old question is on the horizon: what am I going to wear? Whether you’re hopping between family gatherings, or pub trips and dinner parties with friends, here’s the ultimate guide to staying stylish for every occasion this Christmas without destroying your student budget.
Family dinner
If your family is one to go all-out with the food, comfortable clothing is a non-negotiable to ensure you have enough room for dessert. Christmas jumpers are a must in many households on Christmas Day, so why not go full-out? Nothing says holiday cheer like a jumper with lights and jingling bells! Pair with a chic pair of stretchy trousers or a comfy skirt for a versatile but fashionable fit, whilst keeping the mood bright. Tu clothing at Sainsburys has trendy jumpers that also give that Bridget Jones style.
Christmas party
Parties are your time to shine – literally. Put your best frock forward with sequins, sparkle, and festive tones like dark red and emerald green. Re-wear old favourites, like the little black dress, perhaps accessorised with a cute red hair ribbon, and save a few pennies. These items can be worn year-round, so keep those glitzy garments for birthdays, weddings, and New Year’s. Primary items are of course dresses, but fun tops paired with basic bottoms are also a staple – just remember, don’t wear heels on icy pavements! Check out the range of dresses available on ASOS for inspiration.

Pub night
For your last trip to Friendship Inn before the break, you’ll want to go for a cosy edge. Maybe the classic ‘jeans and a nice top’ combo is the way to go or turn to a warm chunky knit layered over a sparkly skirt, paired with some fluffy boots. Remember to bring some outerwear for those outdoor tables – that garden can get chilly! Cosy jumpers can always be found in charity shops, so make sure to make the most of the ones right here on our doorstep.
Formal
Heading to a Winter Formal? These events call for a polished dress code, but you can still stay stylish on a budget. Re-wear old formalwear, perhaps from your high school prom, or search thrift shops and online outlets like Vinted. A long red gown radiates festivity, whilst a velvet suit adds a seasonal twist. Bedazzle your look with themed accessories, such as bauble earrings or a festive tie.
Film night in
A Christmas movie marathon will surely be top of your bucket list this season. Of course, these sessions call for maximum comfort, meaning Christmas pyjamas are the way to go. Brave the busy rush of Primark to grab some matching pyjamas with your housemates, settle down with a mug of hot chocolate, and you’re all set for a re-watch of Home Alone. Complete with a pair of extra fluffy socks and a blanket.

Whatever your plans are this season, you’re sure to be both stylish and warm, as well as being ready for a mince pie (or three). Most importantly, enjoy getting dressed up for the festivities, and have fun however you celebrate.
