Vamp up your wardrobe

Once again it is that time of year; the time for guiltless gorging on sweets, the excusable wearing of next-to-nothing, and the compulsory watching of horror films that result in sleepless nights. Halloween is upon us, which means we must plan this year’s costume. However, if you’re a bit strapped for cash yet still want to get involved in the festivities, here are a few pieces that you’ll be able to pull off all year round. Think of it as an investment…

1)     Costume Idea: Cleopatra

The Statement Necklace. A key piece of any wardrobe and an absolute essential when becoming the ancient Queen of Egypt.  Teamed with heavy black eyeliner, a gold dress and some sandals to be instantly transported back to Ancient Egypt. After returning from the Nile, this necklace will dress up a plain top teamed with jeans, or accentuate an outfit for a night out.

2)     Costume Idea: Skeleton

The Spooky Skeleton, one of the most popular of Halloween costumes to date. Come on, what is scarier than a walking talking bag of bones? Ok, it’s true, these days, it is perhaps more comical than creepy. So, if this is the case, these x-ray skeleton leggings will give the ‘funny’ some ‘fashion’. Add a pair of slouchy boots and an oversized tee and you’ll be turning heads. Be sure to listen out for jaws hitting the pavement (it’s a glorious sound).

3)     Costume Idea: Vampire/Witch

The witch and vampire costumes: they’ve been on the Halloween scene since the very first ‘Trick or Treat’. These are timeless classics which are easy to assemble with maximum impact. So if you think its time to upgrade your costume from creepy to chic, frightening to fashionable then consider this black cut-out midi dress. Throw on either a witch’s hat or a pair of fangs and accessorise with a broomstick or fake blood accordingly. This LBD will carry through all the way to Christmas parties and far beyond; who doesn’t love versatility?

4)     Costume Idea: Catwoman/Black Widow/General ass-kicking heroine

Inspired by Anne Hathaway and Scarlett Johansson stealing the show from Batman and each of the Avengers, the deadly female assassin look is totally en vogue. But rather than going out and buying a full leather ensemble (guns and all) these panelled leggings may be the answer. Not only will you be looking like a total badass on Halloween, but for the 364 days until the next one. Iron Man better watch his back…

Burglar in the bedroom

A man locked himself in the bedroom of a student house he was trying to steal from in Fallowfield.

Third year University of Manchester student Naa Acquah came home from a night out to find her front door wide open and bedroom door locked on Sunday, October 6.

“I felt violated. I felt like it was a personal attack,” Acquah, who lives near the Ram and Shackle pub, told The Mancunion.

Her housemates had mistaken the intruder for Acquah, returning home earlier.

“[Naa] started shouting, asking why the door was wide open,” said housemate Immy Burgess. “Me and my other housemate came out and said we’d heard her come in about five minutes ago really loudly.

“We were worrying someone had got in even though the door had been locked.”

It was at this point that Acquah’s bedroom door handle started to shake.

“Her bedroom door handle started moving up and down,” said Burgess, a third year English Literature student. “Like he was warning us he was in the house.”

Acquah ran outside to phone the police and get help from their neighbours when the unidentified man appeared at her front door, he proceeded to shut himself inside their house with Burgess and fellow housemate Frankie Twynam, who had locked themselves in their bedrooms.

The man appeared to be under the influence of drugs, Acquah, a religions and theology student, told The Mancunion.

She added she was, “absolutely terrified and really vulnerable.”

Locked in their rooms, Twynam and Burgess listened as the burglar walked around their house and into the two empty bedrooms, passing by their doors.

Although most of the windows in the house have bars on, the man managed to escape out of the upstairs bathroom window and avoid being seen by anyone in the street.

When the police arrived they checked the house was safe before the girls came out of their rooms, but despite searching the street they were unable to find the culprit.

“It was a really scary situation as we are all really careful to lock the door and always shut windows to avoid this kind of thing,” Burgess said. “Unfortunately this man had the tools to break in through a locked door, so we were just really lucky that someone came back to the house when they did, otherwise he would’ve gotten away with a lot more.”

The girls also did not have the key to the deadlock on their front door, and said they were frustrated at their estate agents for not giving it to them, because it could have stopped the intruder from getting in.

This year, the Complete University Guide ranked Manchester as the most unsafe town or city with more than one university, in the country.

When ranked on their own, the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University were both in the top three for the universities where students experience the highest levels of crime.

A total of 5983 crimes were reported in Fallowfield and Withington from September 2012 to June 2013, according to statistics from official website police.uk – an average of 598 incidences every month during term time.

This included 792 reported burglaries, 684 incidences of theft – including theft from person – and 458 reports of violent or sexual crime.

The area opposite Oak House halls or residences – the corner of Moseley Road and Wilmslow Road – consistently had the highest reported number of crimes during the time period in question.

Although they did not suffer any physical harm, the fear of having an intruder in their bedrooms at night is something that remains with the girls.

“It’s so scary to think he could’ve been in our rooms when we were sleeping if we hadn’t realised what was going on,” said Burgess, who added that from now on she will always lock her bedroom door at night.

Acquah also said, “I don’t really feel comfortable being in my room in the dark now, but I’m trying to overcome that fear because I can’t let him stop me getting on with my life.”

Man assaulted in Didsbury robbery

A group of armed men broke into a house on Didsbury and assaulted one of the residents.

The burglars broke into the house on Willow Way last Friday night at 9.30 pm. They threatened the family with bricks and knives.  Two young children were also present during the incident.

The residents were forced to go upstairs and hand over their valuables, which included jewellery and money.  The intruders gathered the goods into a pillow case but just before leaving, a 29 year old family member arrived home. They assaulted him severely and then left.

One member of the group was described as having a muscular build, black skin, large eyes and locally accented. The other members were white and wore gloves and covered their faces with masks.

Detective Constable Andy Langlands of West Didsbury Police Station said, “This was a simply terrifying experience for the occupants.  The sight of these men walking in to their home, armed with bricks and knives , has obviously deeply affected them and they now feel unsafe in an environment they should feel comfortable.  To make it worse, one of them was assaulted but luckily he was not seriously injured.

“We believe there were four or five men in total and from what the witnesses say, the man described as being muscular is the main offender responsible for the attack.”

She appealed to the general public for information.  “I would ask anyone who may have seen these men before or after the incident to contact police on 0161 856 4596 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

Vogue’s Fashion Night Out: The review

Created by Anna Wintour in order to promote spending in the bleak year of the recession back in 2009, Vogue’s fashion night out has now made its journey to the North.

The shops in Manchester’s city centre pulled out all the stops in order to impress the fashion crowd. Selfridges offered guests free popcorn, snow cones and drinks. Alongside free Chanel manicures and photo-shoots in a giant Selfridges bag with a DJ set by Jamelia Jamal.

Hugo Boss was the lucky selected store to hold the pre party for the Vogue editors, designers and celebrities that attended the event. H&M also gave their guests celebrity treatment with a red carpet, and Pixie Geldof with a DJ Set.

Harvey Nichols gave shoppers the chance to have their Fashion Night Out t-shirts personalised by Roksanda Illincic and Ted Baker had live fashion illustrators drawing their customers on the night.

The students of Manchester were not forgotten. Designs by Manchester Students were showcased on live models in Gap on the night. 90s: what made it and what didn’t

WHAT’S HOT NOW

Topshop tee

The Crop Top

The midriffs are back out, even throughout winter. This basic crop tee from Topshop is perfect for all occasions and has us thinking of high waisted jeans ‘Friends’ style and short shorts to embrace your inner Spice Girl.

Riverisland

The Dungarees

The casual style of the 90s is back in many varieties. One of which is the revival of the dungarees, sported by many stores in leather, check and denim. The short versions were perfect for summer festivals but this winter opt for the longer length. Wear these classic denim dungarees with a plain tee and converse.

WHAT’S NOT NOW

The Curtains

Think David Beckham and Leonardo DiCaprio, greasy hair parted in the middle long enough to reach those chiselled cheekbones. Boys today have started bringing back the undercut hair styles but were glad that the curtained fringe hasn’t made a revival.

The Wallet Chain

The days of having an easy access chain to your wallet are gone. With pockets full of hundreds of pounds worth of tech –iPhones, iPods, headphones- were glad that this trend has not made a comeback, not only for protection of our precious gizmos but because of how hideous they really were. Who today, wants to decorate their favourite skinny jeans with a metal chain?
